Triticale (X Triticosecale) is an unreal hybrid of rye and wheat first bred in laboratories during a late 19th century, but only recently developed into a viable crop. Based on the kind, triticale might resemble either parent or even use characteristics of two. Now, these are cultivated mostly for forage and animal provender however a few triticale nutrients may be purchased at health food places or even around a bit of breakfast cereals.

A word itself occurs as fusion of the Latin words triticum ("wheat") and secale ("rye").

Fictional triticales
A popular Star Trek episode, The Trouble with Tribbles revolved around the protection of a grain developed from either triticale, quadrotriticale. The late episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series dealt with quintotriticale. Two grains survive lone in the Star Trek universe.
